Benjamin Prescott Chapter NSDAR met Sept. 5

The monthly meeting of the Benjamin Prescott Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution was held at the Fireside Manor on Route 5 in Dunkirk. There were 21 ladies present. The meeting was called to order at 5:03 by Regent Brenda Johnson.

Regent Johnson introduced guests Claudia Markham and Kathy Hebb. Johnson also stated that there are two other ladies who will be members soon.

Kari Wendel has set up the chapter’s Facebook page and members are urged to check it out.

Regent Johnson mentioned that eight members attended Continental Congress in Washington, D.C. in June. She stated that Bonnie Larkin is co-chair of the Pom Pom Bus this year. Johnson also said that members attended the Cathedral of the Pines Ceremony in Rindge, New Hampshire. She reported that the historical society is cleaning the grave of the chapter’s namesake, Col. Benjamin Prescott, and it looks beautiful.

Regent Johnson informed members that the by-laws need to be rewritten. Bonnie Larkin and Elizabeth Sedlmayer agreed to be on the committee to work on the by-laws.

Oct. 11 is the Day of Service. It was agreed that members would bring $5 or gift cards from Wal-Mart or Tops to the next meeting. These donations will be sent to the Dunkirk VA Office.

The District VIII Meeting will be held in Lockport on Saturday, Oct. 19. Wilhelmena Rhodes Kelly, New York State Regent NSDAR, will be present. The meeting will begin at 10 a.m. Any member interested in attending should let Regent Johnson know as the RSVP is Oct. 1.

Members were reminded to record their volunteer hours on the National DAR site.

The next meeting is Oct. 3 at the Patterson Library in Westfield at 1 p.m.

Plans for next year were discussed. One idea is to visit the USS Little Rock and the Buffalo Naval Park.
