Fredonia water lines fixed; problem may be identified

Mayor Athanasia Landis believes the water lines breaking may be from providing temporary water service to Hanson Aggregates’ plant in the town of Dunkirk.

Fredonia has fixed its latest waterline leak and hopes this may be the end of the multiple breaks.

On Saturday, village workers found a water main break in a field off of Clinton Avenue. The 12-inch line did release a lot of water, but Fredonia Mayor Athanasia Landis said the village’s water supply did not deplete and has replenished.

So far there have been more than 10 waterline breaks since Oct. 4.

Landis believes the village knows why the water main breaks are occurring at such a high rate.

At the Sept. 18 village board meeting, Fredonia allowed a 60-day temporary water service to Hanson Aggregates New York, LLC to its plant on Bennett Road in the town of Dunkirk. The added water need may be too much for the system.

“Of course, you can’t be for sure, but we see the possibility the reason (for the breaks was the) temporary line there to give water from the hydrant,” Landis said. “It could be from that stress.”

Landis stressed that it is not guaranteed that the additional water use is the reasoning, but currently, it is closed. From here, the village will find out if that was the cause or there are other issues to address.

“We are going to address it because they need the water,” Landis said.

Landis also wanted to thank the staff at the sewer department and the water purification plant for their hard work.
