County gives advice to victims of floods

MAYVILLE – Since the early morning hours of Wednesday, emergency service personnel from all over Western New York has been assisting county and community leaders to help with the clean-up efforts in the recently flooded communities.

“The volunteer fire departments, emergency personnel, and numerous volunteers have been working tirelessly on behalf of the county residents affected by the recent storm,” said County Executive Vince Horrigan. “The clean-up efforts have gone well and as of this moment most, if not all, previously closed roads are open.”

The following information has been prepared to assist those who were impacted by the recent heavy rains and flooding within the county:

AMERICAN RED CROSS – If you have been displaced by the flooding event or need flood clean up kits contact the Red Cross at 716-664-5115.

SALVATION ARMY – For Flood Kits contact 716-664-4108.

FOR SENIOR ASSISTANCE – Contact NY CONNECTS at 753-4582, 363-4582, 661-7582.

CHAUTAUQUA COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES – call 716-753-4481 for water or sanitation issues. After hours contact would be 716-753-4232.

SMALL BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT CENTER 716-338-1024 Will Take information and provide assistance to small business owners that received flood damage. (Please call for an appointment).

NATIONAL FUEL – If your gas has been turned off, you MUST call National Fuel to have it turned on at 1-800-365-3234.

NEW YORK STATE OFFICE OFFICE OF EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT – Provides Information on what to do after a flood. www.dhses.ny.gov click on Flood Recovery.

A FEW FIRST STEPS TO TAKE AFTER A FLOOD:

Make sure the area has been declared safe, stay away from downed power lines, check for structural damage, and call your natural gas utility if the natural gas service to your home has been shut off.

Before you begin clean up, photograph all damage

Contact your insurance agent.

Let the building air out to remove foul odors.

Notify your local village or town office of damages incurred as soon as possible.
