Dunkirk school officials talk safety on ‘City Speaks’

Interim Dunkirk City Schools Superintendent Sylvia Root, Assistant Superintendent Theresa Gray and School No. 3 Principal Dan Genovese are this week’s guests on “City Speaks.” Tune in to Spectrum 1301 and learn about some of the changes in the safety protocols, the parent notification system, open house activities and many other exciting happenings within Dunkirk’s schools.

Erie County warns residents of STAR exemption scam

Erie County’s Real Property Tax Services Office is issuing a warning following alleged telephone scam efforts that are targeting senior citizens who own property in the county.

According to county employees who have been in contact with residents who have received the phone calls, the scammers are calling local seniors claiming to be employees of Erie County in an attempt to obtain personal financial information.

All property owners are reminded to never give out any personal information over the phone regarding their STAR exemption. Erie County is not involved in the administration of the STAR exemption.

Anyone who receives one of these suspicious calls is asked to simply hang up.

Entries sought for grape dessert competition

It’s almost time for the 52nd annual Grape Festival in Silver Creek. The festival will be Friday to Sunday in downtown Silver Creek. There will be many events, including craft vendors, amusement rides, food vendors, music, and the big parade on Sunday.

One of the events is the annual Grape Dessert Competition. Festival organizers are looking for bakers and cooks of all ages to compete. There is a kids’ “Grape Creations” contest for those 12 and under, and adult competitions in the categories of grape pie, grape dessert, and grape preserve/jam.

Entries are to be delivered to Mount Carmel Church at 135 Central Ave., Silver Creek between 9:30 and 11 a.m. on Saturday. Judging will begin at 11 a.m. There is no charge to enter and there are awards for first, second and third places. First place is a monetary award.

Sinclairville Free Library musical jam program

The Sinclairville Free Library invites the public to participate in musical jam sessions on the following dates and times: Thursday, Sept. 19 from 2 to 4 p.m.; Thursday, Oct. 3 from 5 to 7 p.m.; Thursday, Oct. 17 from 2 to 4 p.m; Thursday, Nov. 7 from 5 to 7 p.m.; Thursday, Nov. 21 from 2 to 4 p.m; Thursday, Dec. 5 from 5 to 7 p.m. and Thursday, Dec. 19 from 2 to 4 p.m. Bring your voices and/or instruments as the library comes together to make music in the community. Audience members are also welcome. This program is free and open to all ages. The library is located at 15 Main St. in Sinclairville. Chicken barbecue fundraiser Thursday

A chicken barbecue fundraiser by JJ’s Backyard BBQ will be held Thursday, Sept. 19, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the cafeteria at Silver Creek High School, Dickinson Street, and the public is welcome.

Meal cost: $10. Proceeds benefit Silver Creek Black Knight Varsity Cheerleaders.

Forestville Fire District Board of Fire Commissioners to meet

The Forestville Fire District Board of Fire Commissioners will conduct its regular monthly meeting Thursday, September 19 at 7 p.m. The meeting will be held at the Forestville Fire Station, 18 Chestnut Street.
