County averaging almost 250 new COVID cases a day

The number of active COVID-19 cases dropped dramatically in Chautauqua County last week. However, the number of new cases being confirmed locally remains high. The county Health Department on Wednesday reported 1,743 new cases for the week ending Jan. 15; for the week ending Jan. 8, the county recorded 1,855 new cases. The number of active cases, though, fell from 1,384 to 339 week over week. There were four new virus-related deaths reported last week. The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Chautauqua County skyrocketed last week, with 265 cases reported on average each day. Between Jan. 2 and Jan. 8, the county Health Department reported 1,855 cases. That comes as at-home test kits have been widely more available locally. By comparison, there were 852 cases reported the week ending Jan. 1; 544 cases the week ending Dec. 25; 689 the week ending Dec. 18; 726 the week ending Dec. 11; and 872 the week ending Dec. 4. County distributing COVID test kits, masks to municipalities

Chautauqua County is distributing at home COVID-19 test kits and KN95 masks, which it received from New York state, to local municipalities. The municipalities that requested the test kits and masks will then organize their own distribution efforts to get the items out to their residents. This effort is part of Chautauqua County’s multi-layered approach to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19 during this period of heightened community transmission. New York to require booster shots for health care workers

NEW YORK (AP) — New York is joining a handful of states in requiring health care workers to get a COVID-19 booster shot. Gov. Kathy Hochul said Friday that she was expanding on a vaccine mandate she instituted last fall requiring health care workers to get vaccinated because too many breakthrough infections were being reported among health care workers.
