State Regents exam off over shootings

The racially motivated mass shooting in Buffalo that killed 10 has led to the cancellation of a state Regents exam.

Betty Rosa, commissioner of the New York State Education Department, said in a Tuesday letter the United States History and Government exam is off. It was set for June 1.

“In the wake of the heinous mass shooting in Buffalo, the Department is taking numerous steps to explore potential areas of support for students and schools across the state,” Rosa wrote. “Such actions include having content experts from the Department, in partnership with educators, review all June 2022 Regents exams, which have already been printed and packaged for shipment to schools.”

The review for the U.S. History and Government test found “content … that has the potential to compound student trauma caused by the recent violence in Buffalo,” she stated.

The exam was scheduled to be held for the first time, but “the tragedy in Buffalo has created an unexpected and unintended context for the planned assessment,” Rosa added.

A graduation exemption will be sought by the Education Department for students who were supposed to take the exam.
