Without a shadow, groundhogs forecast early spring

Dunkirk Dave predicted an early spring Friday morning.

Bob Will, Dave’s handler, said the groundhog did not see his shadow. “His accuracy is 90% because he predicts it from the ground as tradition dictates,” Will said.

Will said Dave went to his traditional pumpkin pie and chowed down, refusing to share, not even acknowledging anyone.

Dunkirk Mayor Kate Wdowiasz and Fredonia Mayor Michael Ferguson were among the spectators, Will noted. At least four television stations sent cameramen for coverage, he added.

They came early, starting at 5 a.m., along with the “early birds” from Dave’s fan club. Will said it was a sizable crowd this year. Longtime assistant Bill Verge agreed, stating he lost track of how many people showed up.

Dunkirk Dave’s prediction agrees this year with that of Punxsutawney Phil, Dave’s more famous cousin down in Pennsylvania.
