GOWANDA — The curtains will open at Gowanda High School for its winter play “Almost, Maine” on Friday and Saturday evening. The 2006 play centers around the emotion love.

“It takes place in a fictional town called ‘Almost, Maine’ and the play revolves around eight separate scenes all dealing with residents of Almost, Maine and how they deal with getting into, hanging on to and falling out of love,” director John Jarzynski said.

What makes “Almost, Maine” unique, according to Jarzynski, is how the topic connects everyone. We’ve all experienced it in one way or another. The performance will be led by a plethora of seniors: Haylee Leatherbarrow, Kurt Stitzell II, Andrew Kruszka, Kala Farley and Alicia Barlow. Rylan Kota is the assistant director and the set director is Bob Ross, who Jarzynski added was a great help to the play.

There is no typical lead of the play as it is eight separate scenes that all take place in a town that is not coastal in Almost, Maine. Jarzynski noted that these residents “say what they mean and mean what they say.”

The seniors have guided the theatric group through example and leadership, which should shine through on stage.

“What’s cool about them is that most of them have been with me since they were freshmen,” Jarzynski said. “They set the exact of how not to just be on stage, but what it takes to in the play, about working together, about dedication. It’s a commitment, so when somebody doesn’t show up for rehearsal, they are peer pressured. It’s not about one person, it’s about the whole show.”

The showtimes are on Friday and Saturday, both starting at 7 p.m. Tickets are $3 for students and $5 for adults; they are available at the door. The play is estimated to be under two hours long.
