Sheriff’s Office warns of scam attempt

The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office this week said it has received reports of a scam attempt.

Specifically, the department said, local residents have reported receiving phone calls from someone claiming to be a sergeant with the Sheriff’s Office.

“This person then claims that the victim has a warrant for their arrest but the warrant can be resolved over the phone,” the Sheriff’s Office said this week in a news release. “The victims are then directed to make payments via gift cards over the phone or another form of electronic payment.”

In its news release, the department said it will “never ask the public to resolve warrants in this manner.”

Those wanted on a warrant are still required to turn themselves in.

“That being said, if you do receive a similar phone call, please file a report with your local police agency,” the Sheriff’s Office said. “Always be vigilant as scammers are always changing up their tactics and can be very convincing. Never give you your personal information over the phone.”
