The Camino de Santiago (The Way of St. James) is a large network of ancient pilgrim routes stretching across Europe and coming together at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in northwestern Spain, where legend has it that the remains of Jesus’s apostle Saint James the Elder are buried.

The Camino has existed as a Christian pilgrimage for more than 1,000 years; and there is evidence of a pre-Christian route as well. Throughout the medieval period, it was one of the three most important Christian pilgrimages undertaken.

Hundreds of thousands of people of various backgrounds continue to walk the Camino de Santiago either on their own or in organized groups each year. Many follow the routes as a form of spiritual path or a retreat for their spiritual growth. It also is popular with hiking and cycling enthusiasts.

The most popular route is the Camino Frances, which stretches 780 km (nearly 500 miles) from St. Jean-Pied-du-Port near Biarritz in France to Santiago.

Hertlein recently completed his own walk and will share his experience of the six-week journey in a special multimedia presentation.

Donation boxes will be available for those wishing to make a contribution. For more information, contact the Opera House Box Office by phone at 716-679-1891, Tuesday-Friday, 1-5 p.m. or visit www.fredopera.org anytime.
