SHERIDAN — A location that has been filled with controversy for nearly 15 years in the town was destroyed by a Monday afternoon fire.

Crews from across northern Chautauqua County were summoned to the call around 5:15 p.m. Scanner reports indicated the fire was taking place at 3491 Route 20.

Crews from Sheridan were called to the scene as were East Dunkirk, West Dunkirk, Dunkirk, Cassadaga, Forestville, Alstar, County Medic 71, Silver Creek, Irving, Sunset Bay and Fredonia Fire Departments. In addition, Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Department and the New York State Police were at the location.

Route 20 had to be closed from Route 39 to Swamp Road while the fire was being fought. Heavy smoke could be seen for at least five to six miles away.

Pawn Stars, which is the name of the business on the front, has been the focus of many issues over the years.

In 2018, the site was under investigation by the Southern Tier Regional Drug Task Force and the New York State Police Special Investigation Unit that centered on the trafficking of narcotics and stolen property. During the course of the search warrant, officers said they seized a quantity of narcotics, marijuana and other contraband.

The location was also the home of the controversial Badd Kitty Club, which identified itself as a “swingers club” and created a stir at numerous Sheridan Town Board meetings. On its website, the club describes itself as a “Private, members only club for couples & singles to explore their passions and unleash their sexual fantasies.”

Investigators remained on the scene through the evening.
