‘Declaration’ is another step in P-TECH process

Students who are entering the welding pathway include Cole Anderson of Jamestown; Logan Gelster of Lake Shore; Ethan Camus of Eden; Tyler McIntyre of Southwestern; Josh Guadagno of Silver Creek; Hayden Chase of Pine Valley; Tyler Cochran and Tyrick Nadi of Westfield; Lucas Washy of Gowanda; and Brandon Nobbs of Dunkirk.

WNY P-TECH recently held its pathway selection ceremony. First-year students declared the direction they’d focus their studies on for the foreseeable future in the program.

“This declaration is so important because students begin taking their first college-level classes during their second year in the program,” said William Smock, WNY P-TECH principal. “This is an exciting time. This is the beginning point for students at P-TECH to begin accruing those college credits. Many of our students finish one-third of their college degrees before entering the JCC campus.”

Ten students are entering the Welding pathway, one of its largest cohorts to date, while five students enter the CADD pathway, two will join the Machine Tool pathway, and six will explore one of P-TECH’s newest fields of study – Mechatronics. For example, students entering the Welding pathway will start taking Welding 1200 next year. Those entering the Mechanical Technology or Mechatronics fields of study will begin taking MCT 1240, an introduction to CADD.
