Town of Pomfret wants lower speed on Fredonia-Stockton Road
The town of Pomfret is seeking a speed limit reduction on Fredonia-Stockton Road.
The Pomfret Town Board agreed this month to recommend it in a letter to the Chautauqua County Division of Transportation. A stretch of road from the Fredonia village line to the LoGuidice Center is the targeted area.
The roadway is Water Street in Fredonia, where the speed limit is 30 miles per hour. It currently soars to 55 miles per hour at the town line, where it becomes Fredonia-Stockton Road. Near the LoGuidice Center, a vocational school run by BOCES, there is a reduced speed zone of 40 miles per hour.
“It goes from 30 to 55, down to 40, up to 55” in a relatively short stretch of southbound road, said Pomfret Town Supervisor Dan Pacos.
He said Chautauqua County Legislator Bob Scudder initially requested the speed reduction in the area from the town line to the LoGuidice Center.
Pacos said there are two options: Extend the 30 miles per hour speed limit from the village border all the way to LoGuidice, or lower the speed limit in that stretch to 45 miles per hour. Pacos favors making it 45 miles per hour.
“That would slow down traffic at that intersection (with Webster Road) where we have had many accidents over the years,” he said.
