Dr. Julius S. Greenstein, Ph.D
Former Fredonia resident, Dr. Julius Greenstein died peacefully in his sleep on June 23 at the age of 89.
Dr. Greenstein spent his entire career in academia, retiring at the age of 82. Born July 13, 1927 in Boston, MA he was a graduate of the Boston Latin School, began his undergraduate program at Clark University and then left college to serve in the U.S. Army, in the 3rd Armored Division, WW ll.
He has a B.A. degree from Clark University (1948), an M.S. from the University of Illinois, Urbana Champaign (1951), followed by a Ph.D, also from the University of Illinois (1954) all degrees in Zoological Sciences. He performed pioneering work in mammal reproduction, including developing an embryonic stain and performed Post-doctoral Studies at Harvard Medical School (1966). Recipient of the Wisdom Award (1970). His academic career included Zoology Professor at University of Massachusetts (1954-59); Chairman, Biology Dept., Duquesne University (1959-70); Chairman of Biology and then Acting Dean of Arts and Sciences, Fredonia State University (1970-74); Dean of Math and Natural Sciences, Shippensburg University (1974-80); President of COTC and Dean Director of Ohio State University Newark campus (1980- 2007); and a sabbatical year as a Distinguished Professor, U.S. Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs (1994-95).
Author: ‘Contemporary Readings in Biology’, 1971, ‘Readings in Living Systems’, 1972. Contributing author to ‘Science, Sex and Sacred Cows’, 1971. Special editor of ‘International Journal of Fertility’, (1958-1969), ‘Contraception’, (1970-1977). Columnist of ‘Once Over Lightly’ in the Newark Advocate, (1981-1993), then in the Licking Countian, (1993-1994).
A life-long devotee of classical music, he was a violinist with the Carnegie Civic Symphony Orchestra during his years at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Joette Mason (1954); children: Abigail Sewall, Jodi Insana (Dave), Jay Greenstein, Blake Greenstein and Dr. Joette Greenstein (Paul Garland); and six grandchildren: Aaron Sewall, Nicholas and Joseph Insana, Hunter Primmer, Hayden Garland and Sydney Greenstein.

Services were held on Tuesday, June 27, 2017 at Brucker & Kishler Funeral Home in Newark, OH and was followed by interment at the National Veterans Cemetery in Dayton, OH.
