Generosity shows

in race turnout

Editor, OBSERVER:

I am writing to express my thanks to the community of Westfield for their support of the third annual Bereda Memorial Run/Walk. This event is held in memory of my two grandchildren, Brennen and Finley Bereda. Proceeds from the race are being used to create a children’s interactive garden at the Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History in Jamestown.

This year’s race was held on a beautiful Saturday morning during alumni weekend in Westfield. On behalf of my family I would like to thank all those who participated in either the 5k run, the 1-mile walk, or the scavenger hunt. Also, a sincere thank you to those who made generous cash donations.

Planning for an event this size requires a dedicated team working throughout the year. I want to thank the race coordinators Kelsey Thomas and Christina Akin, as well as committee member Beth Tarpley for all the hard work they put in to ensure a successful and fun event. We also could not have this event each year without the support of the Westfield Police Department and Fire Department who keep all our participants safe.

Our family is truly grateful to all who have supported this event. Thanks to your generosity we will be able to create a fitting tribute to Brennen and Finley, which can be enjoyed by children throughout this region for years to come.

Buyer beware for cemetery plots

Editor, OBSERVER:

I am offering a note to town of Pomfret residents who are contemplating purchasing a cemetery lot from the towna.

Approximately nine years ago I purchased eight cemetery plots in the Webster Road cemetery. One plot was used for a relative.

During Memorial Day weekend I went there to attend to the gravesite. At that time I observed a new grave that was encroaching on one of my lots. At that time I contacted someone who is in charge of the cemeteries in the town of Pomfret.

He was of no help in the matter. I also contacted the town supervisor who was also of no assistance. I then contacted an attorney to look into the matter which he has done.

It has come to my attention that all the lots in the Webster Road Cemetery are hand drawn out and that a surveyor has never been hired to plot out the exact locations of potential gravesites. I would be wary of purchasing any cemetery lot from the town of Pomfret.

Why they cannot hire a surveyor to lay out the plots in the exact locations is beyond me.
