Twenty years ago – 1993

The Northern Chautauqua County Chamber of Commerce has named Petri Baking Products Inc., as its Economic Development of the Year. Founded in 1935, the company has two factories in the northern Chautauqua County area. Its main factory is based in Silver Creek while another operation is in Dunkirk. A total of 230 people are now employed at the two facilities. Armand Petri started the company making soft sugar cookies in his home and later moved to the current Silver Creek location.

Thirty years ago – 1983

A proposal by Acting County Executive David Dawson to raise $1.5 million in operating revenue for the county solid waste disposal system by charging a user fee drew solid opposition from several North County businesses. Ralston Purina Co. hinted it might have to pull some of its operations out of Dunkirk if the fees are imposed. Others said their operations could be seriously hampered by the fee. The village of Mayville even threatened to stop picking up trash from the county’s office complex in Mayville if the fees are imposed.

Forty years ago – 1973

The freshman social studies class at Fredonia High School is learning local geography from the air this year. Among the participating airborne students are Sharon Chambers, Peggy Meadows and Debbie Jamieson.

Fifty years ago – 1963

C. Edward Kaufman, teacher at Silver Creek High School, gave an account of his study tour this summer through Greece and Italy during the organizational meeting of the Silver Creek Shakespeare Club.
