Twenty years ago — 1998

Barone’s Liquor Store Inc. in Silver Creek is celebrating its 50th birthday this month. The business, which opened in 1948, has survived to become a prime supplier of adult beverages, said current owner Jack Chiappone. Originally two businesses — a liquor store and bakery — Barone’s has grown into a spacious store. Mr. Chiappone was born and raised into the business as his parents had run a grocery store and liquor store in Angola. After retiring from banking, he decided to go into business for himself and is enjoying his time at the store.

Thirty years ago — 1988

From Ad News ….. Proud parents are discovering the Wests Rent-A-Stork Announcement Service provides and convenient and innovative way to inform friends and neighbors of their new arrival. Rent-A-Stork is an adorable 4-foot stork display, delivered and placed in front of the new baby’s home. The color of the bundle hanging from the stork’s beak tells if the baby is a boy or a girl. Rent-A-Stork is located at 42 Carol Ave., Fredonia.

Forty years ago — 1978

Kim Goodell, 17, daughter of Mrs. Kathryn Goodell, 63 Main St., Silver Creek, has been selected as Student of the Week. Treasurer of the senior class, chorus group and Nike Club, Kim is also secretary of the National Honor Society. Ranking near the top of her class, the math and science major plans to pursue a career in electrical engineering following her graduation.

Fifty years ago — 1968

Danny Wolfe, the 6-foot, 170-pound senior halfback at Cardinal Mindszenty High School, is a sure bet to repeat as an All-Catholic selection for the third straight year. He is also being hailed as one of the best running backs in Western New York. A tremendous college prospect, Danny runs like a deer, passes better than most quarterbacks, is one of the best punters around and has no peers when it comes to defense. He is one of the finest all-around athletes to ever come out of Mindszenty.
