Twenty years ago — 1999

Work to demolish the former Welch building on Route 20 could begin as soon as the end of this month. The Brocton Village Board determined that its deteriorating condition poses a threat to the public. An inspection turned up evidence of suspected asbestos, an underground heating oil tank which may be leaking, several barrels of caustic material, other drums that may contain environmentally unsafe material and general junk. The location is a good candidate for redevelopment, once the demolition work is completed.

Thirty years ago — 1989

The Community Group with the assistance of the Dunkirk-Fredonia Branch of NAACP held its first annual Amateur Talent Show in the Community Building Courtney Apartments. The show had three categories: rapping, dance routines and singing. Local winners were Tremayne Moreland and Troy Smith of Dunkirk, known as TNT, who won for the best original rap routine and dance routine. Paul Williams Jr. of Dunkirk, president of the Community Gospel Group, served as master of ceremonies.

Forty years ago — 1979

The Chautauqua County Legislature has refused to consider an emergency resolution protesting the action of Bishop Edward Head of the Diocese of Buffalo in ordering the closing of Cardinal Mindszenty High School in Dunkirk. The resolution failed when it only garnered 11 votes and needed a minimum of 17 votes for consideration. The refusal angered the three sponsors of the resolution, Dunkirk Democrats Chester Tarnowski, Anthony DiRusso and Charles Porpiglia.

Fifty years ago — 1969

Jill Wardell, a 1969 Regents scholarship winner, has been selected Student of the Week at Silver Creek Central School. She is a senior who plans to make art her career. Jill is the co-editor of the school yearbook, and a member of the chorus and the Choralaires. She is the daughter of Mrs. Margaret Wardell of Central Avenue, Silver Creek.
