Twenty years ago — 1999

Nushawn Williams received the maximum sentence allowed for his conviction on sodomy and reckless endangerment charges in Chautauqua County Court. Judge John T. Ward ordered Williams to serve 4 to 12 years in state prison on the charges. Williams, 22, pleaded guilty on Feb. 26 to first-degree reckless endangerment and second-degree sodomy. The plea covers only the five victims who came forward to the district attorney’s office. Williams is accused of intentionally infecting nine young women and one 13-year-old girl with the disease that leads to AIDS.

Thirty years ago — 1989

A sixth-grade class taught by a 1982 Fredonia High School graduate has had its school project selected to represent New Hampshire on the elementary level in a national contest to name NASA’s newest orbiter, scheduled for completion in April 1991. It will replace the Challenger that was destroyed in January 1986. The class is from the Towle Elementary School in Newport, NH, and is taught by Daniel Cherry, son of Mr. and Mrs. Norman Cherry of Miller Road, Fredonia. The students proposed the new orbiter be named Calypso in honor of Jacques Cousteau’s research vessel.

Forty years ago — 1979

Sandra Vona, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. John R. Vona of Chemar Drive, Silver Creek has been selected as Calendar Girl for the month of April. Sandra is the reigning Festival of Grapes Queen and was also selected Princess of the 1978 prom and Queen of the 1978 Homecoming. Sandy is president of both the National Honor Society and the high school band. She plans ot continue her education in the field of French at Villanova University.

Fifty years ago — 1969

Student of the Week is Richard Zeman, son of Dr. and Mrs. Sanford Zeman, 24 Birchwood Drive, Fredonia. A member of the National Honor Society, he is a member of the golf team and and a leader of the school’s pep band. Richard was the male lead in the all-school musical production of “The King and I.” He plans to attend Albany State University College in the fall.
