Twenty years ago — 1999

A new venture at this year’s Chautauqua County Fair in Dunkirk, the Buffalo Zoo’s Zoomobile, is sure to make a hit with the children as it will be appearing daily with different programs and animals. All programs will include live animal demonstrations. Every program includes three to six live animals. This is an opportunity for the children (of all ages) to get up close and personal with the animals and the possibility of touching them between programs.

Thirty years ago — 1989

From Just Between Us ….. Capt. William Wallace, USAF, son of Mr. and Mrs. John “Tubby” Wallace of East Lake Road, Dunkirk recently won first prize for his 1964 Chevrolet Corvette roadster at the 1989 Chevy Fest, Charleston, S.C. The trophy, awarded for the best original Corvette, was given by the Charleston Chevrolet Association and the Classic Chevy Club of Charleston. Capt. Wallace, presently stationed at Charleston AFB as a C-141 air commander and simulator instructor, resides in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.

Forty years ago — 1979

Sarah Shuster of Fredonia is turning the National AAU Age Group Diving Championship in Woodlands, Texas, into a one-girl show. For the second time in two days, she outpointed her 15-16 year old competitors, this time in the 3-meter dive. A day earlier, she was victorious in the 1-meter dive. She also has qualified for the National Outdoor AAU Diving Championships in Decatur, Ala.

Fifty years ago — 1969

“You’ve Come A Long Way Baby!,” a chant heard regularly via television commercials, reflects the attitude of Business and Professional Women toward the national organization — founded in July 1919. The local branch, Dunkirk and Fredonia Business and Professional Women, observed the 50th anniversary year with a luncheon at the Shorewood Country Club.
