Twenty years ago — 1999

Lorinda Cohen of Angola received a check for $2,000 which will go toward her expenses as she tries to reach the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia, in the field of women’s archery. The money was raised from a golf tournament sponsored by Sturgeon Point Sportsmen’s Club, Old Ford Athletic Club and Stroh’s Athletic Club. Darwin Wilson, chairman of the tournament, presented the check to Ms. Cohen.

Thirty years ago — 1989

The Fredonia Chamber of Commerce recently presented a Spirit of Fredonia Award to Hank Bokman Inc. The firm totally renovated their building and site at 212 East Main St., creating a much more attractive building. This resulted in an improved impression of the Fredonia community. Receiving the award on behalf of Mr. Bokman was Joseph Basinait, general manager of the dealership.

Forty years ago — 1979

On Aug. 22, an enthusiastic group of about 100 visiting dignitaries and friends joined with an equally enthusiastic group of students and staff to celebrate the first anniversary of the Cassadaga Job Corps Center. Giving the keynote address during the assembly portion of the program was U.S. Congressman Stanley A. Lundine.

Fifty years ago — 1969

Leon D. Price, 137 Fizell Ave., Dunkirk is the new principal of School 3 in Dunkirk. A graduate of Dunkirk High School and Fredonia State University College, the 32-year-old Dunkirk native will succeed John Lynch. Mr. Price will also continue as coordinator of reading for the Dunkirk public schools.
