Meeting Miami Dolphins quarterback Dan Marino in person was a dream come true for Darrin Carlson, an eighth-grader at Cassadaga Valley Central School. The trip to Florida that made this happen was provided through the special efforts of the CVCS community. Darrin, 14, has muscular dystrophy, a chronic condition that keeps him confined to a wheelchair. Not only did Marino sign Darrin’s football, they also sat and talked for a brief period of time.

Students in Mark Brown’s fourth-grade class at Cassadaga Elementary School have enjoyed the companionship of two doves since the beginning of the school year. The young doves were just out of the nest when they arrived in the classroom and are now beginning to develop the neck rings characteristic of their breed. The students have trained the doves to stay on or near the roost at all times and clipped wings prevent the doves from flying out of the classroom.

There are going to be several new faces in Dunkirk city government, which will be headed by Mayor-elect Gary C. Michalak beginning Jan. 1. Mr. Michalak, the Democratic nominee, won a landslide victory in the city election over Mayor Gilbert W. Snyder, the incumbent Republican. The unofficial plurality was 1,224 votes, a huge margin for a city mayoral race. Mayor Snyder, who defeated Mr. Michalak in 1977 by 497 votes, was seeking a third two-year term. Mr. Michalak will be the youngest mayor in city history at age 26.

Clothier, who succeeded his father as Hanover supervisor, expressed the family’s appreciation for the honor.
