Twenty years ago – 1999

The Dunkirk-Fredonia Lions Club recently celebrated its 58th Charter Night with special recognition being given to two of its members. Bert Bullock was the recipient of the Multiple District 20 Robert J. Uplinger Distinguished Service Award and is the highest honor acknowledged by the MD-20. Walter Klyczek was named a Melvin Jones Fellow by Lions Club International Foundation in recognition of his commitment to serving Lions programs locally and to the world community.

Thirty years ago — 1989

A bald eagle paid a visit to Cassadaga recently, according to Art Washington of Pettit Place. Mr. Washington said he spotted the bird, which he described as immature, perched on a tree near the shoreline of his neighbor’s property. It sat there about a half hour before taking off. The bird was about 2 1/2-feet tall and just beginning to develop its distinctive white tailfeathers

Forty years ago – 1979

Kirk’s Jewelers and Gifts in the D & F Plaza is a long-anticipated reality for owner Kirk W. Frey. Mr. Frey, a native of Buffalo, has undergone intensive training in all phases of the jewelry trade. When he first learned store space would become available at the shopping plaza, he began making plans. Kirk’s Jewelers carries a wide variety of merchandise — from fine ceramic pieces to rings, watches and neck chains.

Fifty years ago — 1969

Miss Edith M. Osborne, 64, of 527 Swan St., Dunkirk, who was fatally injured in an automobile accident at Cental and Lucas avenues in Dunkirk on Nov. 8, served as librarian at Dunkirk High School for many years. A native of Falconer, she resided in Dunkirk since 1931. Miss Osborne was a graduate of Lincoln Memorial University, University of Rochester and Syracuse University.
