Thirty years ago — 1990

Woodbury Vineyards is celebrating their 10th anniversary July 1 with a big party in the vineyards at the winery on Roberts Road in Dunkirk. The Woodbury family is celebrating a decade of evolution from a “pick-your-own” fruit farm to a world-class winery producing medal-winning Chardonnay and Riesling wines and methode champenoise champagnes.

Forty years ago — 1980

The first edition of “The Candle,” a literary magazine, was released at Dunkirk High School on June 18. The new publication’s advisor, English teacher Richard Valvo, stated the name for the magazine was derived from another publication produced at DHS around the turn of the century. “The Candle” then contained a variety of written work and photos as will as advertisements and is believed to be the predecessor of “The Citizen,” the school newspaper.

Fifty years ago — 1970

Jack A. Peacock has been installed as president of the Silver Creek Jaycees. The banquet was held at the Revere Inn.
