Thirty years ago — 1990

In light of the three defeats by district voters of the 1990-91 sports proposition, it appears the Fredonia Central School Board of Education may opt for a self-supporting sports program instead of putting up the sports proposition for a fourth district vote. The Fredonia All-Sports Booster Club decided it would like to try to raise the necessary funds for the sports program rather than go without any sports for the year.

Forty years ago — 1980

The last bank robbery in Dunkirk before the one that occurred three weeks ago at the Liberty Bank in the D & F Plaza occurred at the former Merchants Bank on Main Street (now the site of the M & T Bank) on July 2, 1935. Shots were fired in that one, which took place 45 years ago.

Fifty years ago — 1970

Dunkirk sisters Margaret and Rita Barone received their brown belts in Kung-Fu Karate recently. The girls, students of Willem Reeders of Dunkirk, are reported to be the first girls to hold recognized brown belts presented by the World Kung-Fu Association.
