Forty years ago — 1980

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the incorporation of Dunkirk as a city. The government dates back to 1837 when Dunkirk was incorporated as a village. The village was within the Town of Pomfret until Nov. 17, 1859 when a separate Town of Dunkirk was formed. Dunkirk, which was one of the last communities in northern Chautauqua County to incorporate as a village, became the county’s first incorporated city in 1880.

Fifty years ago — 1970

Comedy skits were presented this week at the New York Avenue playground in Dunkirk. Children awarded prizes for the best performances were Cindy LaPaglia, Buddy Marmurowicz, Jan and Judy Sadowski and Jon Stokes.
