Thirty years ago — 1990

The “Citizens for Sports” has now been formed after a large turnout of residents gathered to discuss how to fund interscholastic sports in the Fredonia Central School District for the 1990-91 school year. The Fredonia All-Sports Booster Club does not have the means to raised the needed funds. In order to fund an austerity sports budget, $37,000 would have to be raised through donations with another $8,500 from fees charged at sporting events this year.

Forty years ago — 1980

A People in Profile states: “She does her own cooking and cleaning, bakes her own bread, and neighbors say her pizza is out of this world. She also gives meticulous care to her rose bushes, hedges and vegetable garden and until recently pruned her various fruit trees. Who is this ambitious woman? Her name is Carrie M. Vircant of 31 Howard St., Dunkirk, and she’s no ordinary homemaker. You see, Mrs. Vircant is 94 years old.”

Fifty years ago — 1970

The Rev. Edwin Moran, CP, has been assigned to the Holy Cross Apostolic Center on West Lake Road, Dunkirk. Father Moran first began his studies for the priesthood in Dunkirk at the former Holy Cross Seminary.
