Forty years ago — 1980

Apparently some youthful local fans are getting an early jump on their Fredonia High School counterparts in the annual battle of words and mischief. “DHS,” “DHS ’82” and “’82 will do it to you” were some of the inscriptions spraypainted onto the side of the Fredonia Middle School building, a sidewalk and a parking lot, a silver-painted light pole and an outhouse near the Route 60 softball field in Fredonia. The annual Dunkirk-Fredonia football game isn’t until Oct. 31 this year.

Fifty years ago — 1970

Winners of the Tin Can Regatta sponsored by the Dunkirk Recreation Commission include Steve Gittings, Bob and Sue Dew, Alan and Laura Zielinski, Tom Andrews, Margaret Gregory, Mary Jane Barris and Butch, Darlene and Karen Sommitz.
