Thirty years ago — 1991

On a recent Saturday morning, four-yearold Alan Haskins shouted “Fire! Fire!” in the halls of the Century Apartments in Sinclairville where he lived. The youngster’s alarm made the residents of the 16-apartment complex aware of the danger that eventually destroyed the Main Street building and its contents. All escaped safely.

Forty years ago — 1981

James W. Hyland, 74 King St., Dunkirk has been hired as a full-time paid firefighter to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Leo Wysocki from the Dunkirk Fire Department. Hyland was third on a Civil Service list which was due to expire last July but was recently extended by the Dunkirk Civil Service Commission due to the large number of people still on the list who are interested in firefighter jobs.

Fifty years ago — 1971

Buffalo Bills owner Ralph Wilson is being “courted” by a group of officials in Seattle, Wash., in hopes of transferring the franchise to Seattle. Wilson is expected to ask for formal permission from the NFL to transfer the franchise unless Buffalo produces plans for a stadium to replace the deteriorating War Memorial.
