The Rev. John Kilian, son of Helen Kilian of Roberts Road, Dunkirk and the late Casimir Kilian, has returned from a five-week spiritual retreat in the Ashram Monastery of the Holy Trinity in Shantivanam, South India.

Forty years ago — 1981

The best poster (northern Chautauqua area) in the recent poster contest sponsored by the Chautauqua County Dental Society was that done by Bryon Prentiss of Dunkirk. The 8-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Prentiss of Lake Shore Drive East, Dunkirk, Bryon is a second-grade pupil at St. Hyacinth’s School. Dentists Mark Twichell, Bruce Thering and John Berner were the judges.

Fifty years ago — 1971

Robert Fortney, a teacher at Cassadaga Valley Central School, has been selected as one of 20 teachers from throughout the state to receive a summer scholarship. Mr. Fortney will use the $500 stipend to complete his M.S. degree.
