Thirty years ago — 1991

Mrs. Anna M. Gugino recently received a Papal Blessing from Pope John Paul II on April 6, the occasion of her 97th birthday. She also received greetings from President and Mrs. George Bush, as well as many gifts, flowers and cards from friends and relatives. Mrs. Gugino resides with her daughter, Josephine Hoisington, at 260 Temple St., Fredonia.

Forty years ago — 1981

Kenneth W. Merle has resigned as a county coroner, effective April 21. In his letter of resignation, Mr. Merle cited “personal reasons” for leaving the job he has held since 1979. The resignation of Merle, a Republican, raised speculation that Anson Steward of Dunkirk, who was not reappointed last month, might be nominated for the position. Sources close to the legislature deem that highly unlikely.

Fifty years ago — 1971

Linda Trank, a senior at Silver Creek Central School, has been selected Student of the Week. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Trank of Main Street, she plans to continue her education at the college level in the field of modern language.
