Thirty years ago — 1991
It was “Bob Meister Day” when the Dunkirk Rotary Club met at Shorewood Country Club. The luncheon meeting and program following honored Robert P. Meister Sr., a former Dunkirk businessman now living in Naples, Fla. A charter member of the club that was founded in 1936, he was honored with the Paul Harris Fellowship.
Forty years ago — 1981
It’s not often someone offers to sell a $148,000 piece of land for $1, but that’s the proposal the Dunkirk and Fredonia Plaza has made to the city of Dunkirk, and the city’s common council is expected to accept the offer. The land being offered by the plaza to the city is at the northernmost edge of its parking lot. It has been appraised at $148,000.
Fifty years ago — 1971
The new U.S. Postal Service on July 1 took over the function of the old Post Office Department under a reorganization act passed last year by Congress. Coincidentally, the U.S. Postal Service was formed exactly 124 years after the first Federal postage stamp was issued.
