Thirty years ago — 1991

Ray Waterman of Collins, president of the World Pumpkin Confederation, won the recent pumpkin weighoff at Waterman’s Restaurant with a 780-pound specimen. An estimated 1,000 people were on hand for the weighoff. Waterman credits his success to seed collected from his 674.5-pound 1990 entry. His goal is to grow a 1,000-pound pumpkin.

Forty years ago — 1981

Student of the Week is Melinda Sue Wagner, 17, a student at Westfield Academy and Central School. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carleton Wagner of RD 1, North Portage Street, Westfield. Melinda is currently president of the student government, a member of the volleyball and tennis teams, and a varsity cheerleader. She is active in school choral groups and musicals and is a member of the Chautauqua Youth Board.

Fifty years ago — 1971

The offices of the Samuel A. Leone Insurance and Real Estate Agency have been moved from 4 West Main St., Fredonia to the Russo Building in Fredonia.
