Thirty years ago — 1991
Winners of the essay contest themed “Promoting Peace and Justice in Our Country” were recognized. They are: Carly Galindo, first-place winner from Dunkirk High School; Jessica Croxton, Fredonia High School’s first-place winner; and second place winners, Jason Gestwicki (DHS) and Danielle Epolito (FHS). Serving on the selection committee were Bill Warmbrodt, the Rev. Rodney Houck, Carol Grant Smith and Jean Haynes.
Forty years ago — 1981
Brocton’s Randy Harriger was the first deer hunter to report to the OBSERVER with a successful opening day kill late Monday morning. Now in his sixth year of hunting, Harriger bagged the 150-pound, 8-point buck near Barnes Road in Portland shortly after sunrise, 7:03 to be exact. It was his third deer in six years.
Fifty years ago — 1971
Robert Williams of 69 West Third St., Dunkirk was the first hunter to enter a deer in the OBSERVER-WBUZ hunting contest following the opening of the shotgun season morning. His entry was a five-point buck that weighed 105 pounds.
