Thirty years ago — 1992

Dunkirk Elks Lodge 922 honored Warren Stringer of Point Drive West, Dunkirk as its “Elk of the Year.” Mr. Stringer was presented with a plaque by Exalted Ruler William G. Briggs Sr., recognizing his 15 years as a trustee and his many years of service on various committees. A lodge member for 35 years and now a life member, Mr. Stringer is retired from Allegheny Ludlum Steel Corporation.

Forty years ago — 1982

The wooden, carved Indian just west of Memorial Park, looks even more sorrowful than usual with a coating of ice and snow. Peter Toth, the Hungarian-born artist who carved the Indian head in August 1973, has received nationwide publicity. He vows to carve an Indian head monument in every state and already has completed about 40.

Fifty years ago — 1972

At its first organizational meeting of the 1972 season, the Chautauqua County Volunteer Firemen’s Gala Days Committee elected Daniel Murray of Fredonia as chairman.
