Thirty years ago — 1992

The search for a Stockton fugitive took a new twist when a man fitting his description disappeared into a wooded area of Ripley after failing to stop a pursuing State Police car by ramming it at high speed. While over two dozen officers cordoned off the area and searched throughout the night, as of this morning, the man police believe to be Ralph “Bucky” Phillips was still at large.

Forty years ago — 1982

A 19-year-old Fredonia man has been chosen as one of two recipients of the 1980 Young American Medal for Bravery, which will be presented to him next month by President Reagan. Robert Noble, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Noble Jr. of North Road, pulled three persons from a wrecked, burning automobile after the auto rammed head-on with a tractortrailer on Route 5 on June 22, 1980. Only one of four persons in the car lived. The lone survivor, Edith Sestak, 48, of Erie, nominated Robert for the award. He was selected by members of the Young American Medals Committee from among 70 nominees.
