Thirty years ago – 1992
James Hayward, chairman of the 17-county Western New York Veterans Nursing Home Task Force, informed the Perrysburg Town Board that the Perrysburg site for the proposed Western New York Veterans Nursing Home does not meet the Veterans Administration’s criteria and a continued effort to pursue the plan will only serve to splinter support for the Batavia site, which meets all the necessary criteria.
Forty years ago – 1982
The Dunkirk Roll Arena Skating Club recently competed in the fourth annual SkatErie Invitational in Erie, and three members came home with trophies. They are Karl Gatto, second place in beginners men’s freestyle; Becky Woods and Michael Skinner, third place in sub-sophomore dance. Professional skating instructor is Fabian Mollnar.
Fifth years ago – 1972
Grand opening ceremonies are being held at the newly-decorated office of Niagara Permanent Savings Association, East Fourth Street, Dunkirk.
Sixty years ago – 1962
Historic No. 999, the New York City steam locomotive that set a speed record of 112.5 miles per hour between Batavia and Buffalo 69 years ago, raced through Dunkirk this morning on its way to Chicago.
