Retrospective

Thirty years ago — 1994

Vonnie VanCuren, a senior at Silver Creek Central School, has been selected as “Student of the Week.” An artistically gifted student, she is the graphic editor and photographer for the school’s yearbook. Vonnie has also designed and is in charge of advertisements for this year’s school musical, “L’il Abner.” She also works part time and the Foliage House Florist Shop. The daughter of Harry and Darlene VanCuren of Windsor Avenue, Silver Creek, Vonnie has been accepted by the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and plans to pursue a degree in visual communications.

Forty years ago — 1984

Albert Newman of Silver Creek has been awarded an honorary doctor of science degree from the State University of New York. Mr. Newman is founder and chairman of the board of Excelco Developments and Newbrook Machinery Corp., both of Silver Creek. SUNY Fredonia President Dallas K. Beal said ” Al Newman is a self-made man who surpassed most of us in the amount of knowledge he taught himself and the amount which he discovered for the benefit of others.”

Fifty years ago — 1974

Mary Colvin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Colvin, Birchwood Drive, Fredonia is the first runnerup in the New York State Junior Miss Pageant. A Fredonia High School senior, she placed first in “poise and appearance.”
