Thirty years ago — 1993 The Chautauqua Italian American Organization will hold its first Italian Festival on Sept. 25 at Floral Hall, Chautauqua County Fairgrounds, Dunkirk. The event will feature a variety of authentic Italian entertainment, food, arts and crafts, demonstrations, dancers and an Italian folklore storyteller. Thirty years ago — 1993 Former Fredonia resident Robert Suggett recently received a medal 51 years after the incident for which he was honored. The medal, which honored his heroic efforts against the German attack on Russia during World War II, was engraved with the signature of Russian President Boris Yeltsin and was accompanied by an invitation to meet with the Russian leader in Moscow. Thirty years ago — 1993 On the morning of Aug. 12, Jacob Bush, son of Store Manager Ken Bush, cut the ribbon to officially open the new Kmart at 3901 Vineyard Drive. Assisting him were Marian Anderson and Charles St. George, representing the senior citizens of Fredonia and Pomfret. The money decorating the official ribbon (totaling $1,000) was donated by Kmart to the Fredonia-Pomfret Senior Citizens Center. Thirty years ago — 1993 Dr. Estelle M. Crino of Silver Creek, principal of Gowanda Elementary School, is retiring from an educational career spanning more than 42 years in the field of teaching and administration. She began teaching in 1950 as an Allegany Franciscan Sister, teaching in a converted cigar factory in a non-segregated area in Ybor City, Tampa, Fla. Dr. Crino completed a six-year teaching position in the Silver Creek schools and in 1979, was the first woman administrator hired to a principalship at Gowanda Central School.
