DUNKIRK: Minor adjustments continue in district

A transformation of the Dunkirk school district, which began in September, is far from finished. Last month, district officials talked about the addition of a playground at the intermediate school — formerly the middle school — and electronic signs that will be placed in front of each building.

“We got into this as soon as we knew that we had some grant money,” said Tim Abbey, district buildings and grounds director. “Of course, with the consolidation happening, the intermediate playground was an immediate need. We had all these grade levels coming together.”

It has not been easy. With grades seven and eight moving to the high school, the intermediate school houses now students in grades three to six.

Getting those students outside is a priority. As part of the grant, the lighted playground will be on the Eagle Street lawn and will be fenced in at the portion closest to the building. Trees are set to get planted on the south side. It will include accessibility ramps. The surface fill will be wood fibers specially engineered for playground use.

Within the next month, voters will be deciding on a $51 million spending plan for the district that includes a slight tax increase. These projects, however, are not part of that plan.

Starting at $3.50/week.
