DUNKIRK Embrace plans for apartments

We’re a bit disappointed by the reaction of some in the community regarding two potential apartment complexes that are being targeted for the city of Dunkirk. At this week’s Chautauqua County Industrial Development Agency meeting, board members heard from officials with Regan Development Corp. to construct the housing units.

One would be located on Washington Avenue and the other on East Fourth Street. Included in the proposal is a childcare center and another portion would be available for veterans who are experiencing homelessness.

Even if you do not agree with Gov. Kathy Hochul, she is absolutely correct when she speaks on the lack of housing currently available. In Dunkirk, it has been obvious for about a decade.

Why else were community leaders so giddy when Battery Point Apartments were proposed around 2016? Because there is a need for that type of housing — in the city and across northern Chautauqua County.

During the meeting, Regan said its objective is to “create a 24-7 live-work area where we can help repopulate the downtown with quality housing, with quality workforce renters who are going to shop and recreate and go to restaurants in the downtown core.”

What exactly is wrong with that? Don’t we want a revitalized business core?

Dunkirk’s Main Street has seen a rebirth, thanks in part to the Southern Tier Environments for Living projects. Since those homes have been built, they have been maintained and improved the look of the neighborhood.

Regan’s proposal needs to be embraced. This city – and region – cannot continue to live in the past, especially when it comes to old housing stock.

Starting at $3.50/week.
