WEATHER Winter’s rude delayed arrival
As tough as it may be to imagine on this bitter day, only one week ago Dunkirk recorded a high temperature of 51 degrees. It was above average, but far from delightful.
Our region was reeling from 70 mph high winds that damaged property and created numerous road hazards. Within days, winter returned with a vengeance.
Though Chautauqua County missed out on the major lake-effect snows that dumped up to 3 feet on the Southtowns, there’s no denying we are finally in the seasonal grip. Temperatures — and more snowfall — is more than likely in the coming days.
That’s what happens when December and early January bring warmer days than normal. Lake Erie — without a sheet of ice — can be unforgiving.
Mild winters are enjoyable. But when the winds arrive with colder temperatures, we do pay a price.
Stay safe out there.
