ENDORSEMENT: Room to improve with executive

Tom Carle, Democratic candidate for Chautauqua County executive, has reason to be proud of his accomplishments in the private sector. Throughout his years of running large and small businesses in the United States and Canada, his decisions were driven by finding results that benefited management as well as the workers.

His work steered major companies and manufacturing plants that included partnerships with Walmart and Gatorade in positive directions, helping grow revenues in some locations that topped $150 million.

In running for the top county post, Carle wants to take those practices and apply it to a $300 million government. Though his efforts are sincere, it is doubtful he can get that accomplished with a Legislature that is led by the opposing party.

It is why we believe the incumbent is deserving of another term. PJ Wendel, as the Republican candidate, has incredible clout to bring about major results for Chautauqua County.

With a campaign slogan of “strong leadership,” we wish that attribute could be seen through a more public lens. While behind the scenes, Wendel has worked recently to bring about cooperation between the groups that advocate for Chautauqua Lake.

That’s a significant triumph that shows his ability to get things done.

His first six years at the helm, we must note, include some disappointments. Spending is out of control. Hirings in the county government are spiking at high numbers. Governments in the cities of Dunkirk and Jamestown are struggling while receiving little help from Mayville.

Despite these setbacks, we still see Wendel as better equipped for the job. He is a tireless advocate for growing the county and never misses an opportunity to promote the successes happening here.

Through party affiliation and a good deal of respect, Wendel has the ability to transform Chautauqua County to a leaner and more efficient government in Western New York. We are starting to see some glimmers of those initiatives taking place now in water districts and consolidation talks.

“Strong leadership” from Mayville can further those efforts. This is where Wendel has to take the next giant step that can be uncomfortable for a stronger future for our communities.

Starting at $3.50/week.
