Wednesday Night Ladies League – The league had its monthly Fun Night. Each League member brought in their favorite appetizer or dessert. This past weekend was a big one at Shorewood Country Club. Three Champions were crowned and a new course record was set. The Ladies Club Champion is Jenny Ringler. The Men’s Senior Club Championship went to Mark Coyle. Also the fourth annual Steeplechase was held. For the third straight year, Dave Newton emerged as the Champion.

A new course record of 64 was set by Kevin Kaszuba.

Jeff Dimmer had a day at the plate, going 3 for 3 with two doubles, a triple and three RBIs. Larry Croft, Matt Bennink and Luke Pattyson fueled the offense with two hits apiece while Jason Tomkiewicz added an RBI double.

James Golubski scored twice for the Braves, going 1 for 4 at the plate. Greg Krazka singled and Cody Wicks added a pair of hits and an RBI.

The men’s hockey team will also host a small ice games training camp for boys and girls on the same dates as the hockey camp. The small ice games training camp will be held from 8:30 until 9:30 a.m. and is for participants aged 13 through 18.

The cost is $75 per player which includes golf, cart, prizes and steak dinner. A Chinese auction, 50/50 and skins competitions will be taking place. Proceeds benefit the Westfield Youth Wrestling program to help pay for equipment, tournaments and to buy new mats.

The 15th annual Randy Goss Memorial Golf Tournament will be held on Saturday, Aug. 15, at Hillview Golf Course.

The tournament will be a two-person scramble and will cost $60 per golfer. The price covers 18 holes of golf, cart, lunch, closest to the pins, skins, prizes and a barbecue dinner at Dom Polski’s, which will be provided by Fred’s Catering.

Golfers are asked to be at the course by 7:45 a.m. The tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30.

The cost is $75 per player which includes golf, cart, prizes and steak dinner. A Chinese auction, 50/50 and skins competitions will be taking place. Proceeds benefit the Westfield Youth Wrestling program to help pay for equipment, tournaments and to buy new mats.

Proceeds from previous tournaments have been used to establish an annual Gary Tripp Colorectal Cancer Research Fund at Roswell Park, an annual GTMGT Dunkirk High School scholarship and an annual donation to the GTMGT SUNY Fredonia scholarship.

Fredonia Midget Football and

Cheer Signups

Any participant who still wishes to register for the midget football program may do so on Wednesday, July 29, at the Eagan Sports Complex on Clinton Street, from 5:30 til 7:30 p.m., or at the first practice, which is Aug. 3, at 6 p.m., at the Baseball Field on Chestnut Street.

To register, participants must attend, or live, in the Fredonia School District. Those interested must be eight years of age before Aug. 1, up to going into eighth grade. They also cannot turn 15 before Dec. 1.

Fredonia Hockey Camp

The Fredonia Blue Devils men’s hockey team will hold a camp for boys and girls ages 5 through 12 from Aug. 24 through Aug. 27. The camp will run from 10 until 11:30 a.m. at the Steele Hall Ice Arena.

The men’s hockey team will also host a small ice games training camp for boys and girls on the same dates as the hockey camp. The small ice games training camp will be held from 8:30 until 9:30 a.m. and is for participants aged 13 through 18.

The 50th Annual Marigold Golf Tournament was recently played at Shorewood Country Club. Each team represented a different country. The format was a step-aside scramble. The American Flight was won by the team of Sue Marsh, Grace Hanlon, Jan Damico and Sheila Schwabl. Meanwhile, the European Flight was won by Kay Poweski, Monica Lane, Rebecca Catalano and Joan Catalano.

The team of Megan Bleck, Jenny Ringler, Morgan Genovese and Sue Genovese took second in the American Flight, while third place went to Cindy Warster, Cindy Sullivan, Cindy Kukoda and Jean Daley.

The foursome of Mary Haight, Lori Danforth, Debbie McCown and Connie Dugas placed second in the European Flight with third place going to Daryl Spacc, Debbie Bleck, Sue Ketcham and Shari Heald.

Megan Bleck was closest to the American Flag on No. 1 and she also had the longest drive on No. 5 with a handicap of +20. Sue Marsh was closest to the pin on No. 6 with a handicap of 0-20. The Women Who Golf For Fun – Vicki Westling held first place Wednesday. Betty Bart came in second and Pat Daniel placed third. Arlene Valvo/Barton was declared Golfer of The Week. The monthly luncheon has been cancelled for July. A sign up sheet for the August “end of season luncheon” will be posted at the club house. 15th Annual Randy Goss Memorial Golf Tournament

The 15th annual Randy Goss Memorial Golf Tournament will be held on Saturday, Aug. 15, at Hillview Golf Course.

The tournament will be a two-person scramble and will cost $60 per golfer. The price covers 18 holes of golf, cart, lunch, closest to the pins, skins, prizes and a barbecue dinner at Dom Polski’s, which will be provided by Fred’s Catering.

Dunkirk Little League will host the 9-10-year-old girls Section 1 tournament today.

The games will feature District 38 Fredonia and District 1 Grand Island. The teams will play a double-header starting at 4 p.m. If a third game is needed, it will be played on Tuesday. The winner will move on to the state tournament to be held July 29 through Aug. 3, in Babylon.

Wednesday Travel League

The league held its third Major event of the season, the Frank Borowski Invitiational, at Gowanda Country Club. The tournament is named for league founder Frank Borowski, who now resides in Florida.

Kevin Kaszuba was the overall winner after posting the low round of a 2-under par 70, shattering the league course record of 81, set by Steve Zatorski last year. Kaszuba’s round included five birdies and the low front and back nine scores of 1-under 35’s. Ed Tofil finished second with 77 and recorded his record fourth career eagle, holing out his second shot on the 344-yard par-4 3rd hole. His record-setting eagle broke a tie with his brother John at three career eagles. Tim Walawender finished third with 81.

7th Annual Nathan George Memorial

Co-Ed Softball Classic

The Nathan George Foundation, Inc. will be hosting The 7th Annual Nathan George Memorial Coed Softball Classic on Saturday, Aug. 8 and Sunday, Aug. 9, if needed, at Promenschenkel Stadium, School No. 7 and Koch’s softball fields in Dunkirk, beginning at 8 a.m.

Teams will compete for the championship title in a single pitch, double elimination tournament, with cash prizes to the top two teams. Team slots are still available and must register no later than July 17. Players must be over the age of 16 to participate.

The tournament will feature food and beverages by Don Bennice, Rinconcito Criollo and Coughlan’s Pub, music by DJ Joe Gould, 50/50 drawings, and children’s activities.

On Friday, Aug. 7, a dinner and wine raffle will be held at the Fredonia Beaver Club, with beef on weck and Italian sausage by Fred’s Catering. Tickets are $10 pre-sale and $12 at the door. The dinner and raffle will begin at 5 p.m., with live music by 2nd Street Sunset – formerly known as US – starting at 8 p.m.

This year’s tournament is sponsored by The Fredonia Beaver Club and Dunkirk Metal Products of WNY. All proceeds will benefit The Nathan George Foundation, Inc., which supports youth sports programs in need and awards annual scholarships to local high school athletes.

The Nathan George Foundation, Inc. will be hosting The 7th Annual Nathan George Memorial Coed Softball Classic on Saturday, Aug. 8 and Sunday, Aug. 9, if needed, at Promenschenkel Stadium, School No. 7 and Koch’s softball fields in Dunkirk, beginning at 8 a.m.

Teams will compete for the championship title in a single pitch, double elimination tournament, with cash prizes to the top two teams. Team slots are still available and must register no later than July 17. Players must be over the age of 16 to participate.

The tournament will feature food and beverages by Don Bennice, Rinconcito Criollo and Coughlan’s Pub, music by DJ Joe Gould, 50/50 drawings, and children’s activities.

On Friday, Aug. 7, a dinner and wine raffle will be held at the Fredonia Beaver Club, with beef on weck and Italian sausage by Fred’s Catering. Tickets are $10 pre-sale and $12 at the door. Fredonia started it’s 2015 All Star tournament with a victory over Southwestern in a game suspended and delayed twice by rain.

Mike Barnes and Tyler Putney shared the duties on the mound for Fredonia striking out nine and walking only two batters.

Joey Gullo had a two RBI single for Fredonia and Dalton Gardner blasted a double off the right field fence. Alex Rush, Barnes and Putney contributed singles in the victory.

Southwestern was led at the plate by Nate Card, who had two singles. Drew Keppel, Drew Wigren, Ethan McNamara and Callen Barren also had singles for Southwestern.

Fredonia will play Falconer in the second game of the tournament at Southwestern.

Memorial Golf Tournament

Plans for the 2015 Gary Trip Memorial Golf Tournament are progressing. The tournament is set for Saturday, Sept. 12, at Hillview Golf Course and Vineyards Golf Course. Registration fee is $60 per golfer and will include food on the course and dinner at the Kosciuszko Club.

Registration will be held at 9 a.m., with a shotgun start to follow at 10. Dinner and awards will be held at 4 p.m. Deadline to signup foursomes is Friday, Aug. 28. To register, contact Katie or Pat at 366-1044.

Proceeds from previous tournaments have been used to establish an annual Gary Tripp Colorectal Cancer Research Fund at Roswell Park, an annual GTMGT Dunkirk High School scholarship and an annual donation to the GTMGT SUNY Fredonia scholarship.

The Jamestown Babe Ruth World Series Board of Directors has announced that the general public will be able to come down to Diethrick Park the week of Aug. 15-22 and watch the Babe Ruth World Series for free.

Marauder Trotter

to Be Held Today

The Dunkirk High School Class of 1989 will host the Marauder Trotter 5K Run/Walk today, on the DHS campus.

The community event will start at 9 a.m. with a kids’ run for ages 10 years and younger beginning at 9:45 a.m. The cost is $20 for each adult, $16 student rate, $10 kids’ run with t-shirt and $5 kids’ run without a t-shirt.

Those looking to participate can still register at a cost of $25, from 7:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.

The race, under the direction of classmates D.J. Wilson, race director, and Scott Mekus, event manager, will be a cross-country format, with the course consisting of pavement, grassy areas, and a portion of the track. Timing will be provided by Big White Trailer.

The open-to-public fundraiser will also include a costume contest, awards ceremony, basket auction with over 25 items, entertainment by DJ Joe Gould, bounce house, snacks and refreshments and an appearance from McDonald’s Hamburglar and DHS Marauder mascot.

All proceeds from the event will benefit the Dunkirk High School Class of 1989 Memorial Scholarship in honor of their deceased classmates – Paula Kuschel, Jennifer Styborski, Jody Wdowiasz, Mike Koch, Robert Pierce, James Kulpa, Susan Butts, Elizabeth Barnes, Tony Quiles, Susan Gorka (Stoyle), Scott Roesler, Todd Iskra and Paul Szach. Cash prizes will also be awarded to the top three outfits displaying their hometown pride.

Vineyards Junior Golf

Vineyards Golf Course will host a six-week program for junior golfers ages 6-18, beginning Thursday, July 9. All sessions are held on Thursdays from noon until 2 p.m. Participants may pre-register at Vineyards Golf Course or at Darwin’s Health Club.

The program will emphasize the participants’ scoring game, including pitching, chipping and putting. The program will also include playing golf.

Games will be held Aug. 15-22. This will be the 16th time the Jamestown World Series Committee has hosted a World Series since 1980 in addition to it being the 35th Anniversary of the first ever 13-Year-Old World Series held in Jamestown.

2015 Gary Tripp Memorial

Golf Tournament

Plans for the 2015 Gary Trip Memorial Golf Tournament are progressing. The tournament is set for Saturday, Sept. 12, at Hillview Golf Course and Vineyards Golf Course. Registration fee is $60 per golfer and will include food on the course and dinner at the Kosciuszko Club.

Registration will be held at 9 a.m., with a shotgun start to follow at 10. Dinner and awards will be held at 4 p.m. Deadline to signup foursomes is Friday, Aug. 28. To register, contact Katie or Pat at 366-1044.

Proceeds from previous tournaments have been used to establish an annual Gary Tripp Colorectal Cancer Research Fund at Roswell Park, an annual GTMGT Dunkirk High School scholarship and an annual donation to the GTMGT SUNY Fredonia scholarship.

Vineyards Junior Golf

Vineyards Golf Course will host a six-week program for junior golfers ages 6-18, beginning Thursday, July 9. All sessions are held on Thursdays from noon until 2 p.m. Participants may pre-register at Vineyards Golf Course or at Darwin’s Health Club.

The program will emphasize the participants’ scoring game, including pitching, chipping and putting. The program will also include playing golf.

Marauder Trotter to Be Held July 4

The Dunkirk High School Class of 1989 will host the Marauder Trotter 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, July 4, on the DHS campus.

The community event will start at 9 a.m. with a kids’ run for ages 10 years and younger beginning at 9:45 a.m. The cost is $20 for each adult, $16 student rate, $10 kids’ run with t-shirt and $5 kids’ run without a t-shirt.

The day of registration cost is $25 from 7:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.

The race, under the direction of classmates D.J. Wilson, race director, and Scott Mekus, event manager, will be a cross-country format, with the course consisting of pavement, grassy areas, and a portion of the track. Timing will be provided by Big White Trailer.

The open-to-public fundraiser will also include a costume contest, awards ceremony, basket auction with over 25 items, entertainment by DJ Joe Gould, bounce house, snacks and refreshments and an appearance from McDonald’s Hamburglar and DHS Marauder mascot.

All proceeds from the event will benefit the Dunkirk High School Class of 1989 Memorial Scholarship in honor of their deceased classmates – Paula Kuschel, Jennifer Styborski, Jody Wdowiasz, Mike Koch, Robert Pierce, James Kulpa, Susan Butts, Elizabeth Barnes, Tony Quiles, Susan Gorka (Stoyle), Scott Roesler, Todd Iskra and Paul Szach. Cash prizes will also be awarded to the top three outfits displaying their hometown pride.
