Dunkirk High School’s baseball and softball teams lost games to weather and field conditions yet again Wednesday, but the boys and girls track squads managed to host their competition.

Southwestern defeated both of Dunkirk’s teams in the meet at Karl Hoeppner Field.

The girls meet was a 107-30 loss for the Lady Marauders. “It’s tough, but it was kind of knowing going in, the score was going to be one sided, as we had no entries in the field events,” Marauders coach Adam Woelfle said. “Even with that, the girls still managed to dominate in the sprints.”

The Lady Trojans started off by winning the 4×8 with a time of 10:57.2, and then went 1-3 in the 100 hurdles with Lauren Swan taking first with a 17.4.

Then in the 100, Dunkirk’s Emilee Hanlon took first in 12.8 with Jessica Beehler from Dunkirk taking second in 13.7.

Dunkirk runners Julia Fred, left, and Sierra Jacques compete in the 1600.

It was a sweep for Southwestern in the 1600 with a winning time of 5:21. Taysmarie Otero, Beehler, Jericha Petrella, and Hanlon came back to win the 4×1 in a time of 52.9. Then Hanlon and Petrella went 1-2 in the 400 with times of 1:04.1 and 1:04.5.

Southwestern went 1-2 in the 400 hurdles and 1-3 in the 800. The 200 was a sweep for Dunkirk with Hanlon, Petrella, and Beehler going 27.1, 28.0, and 28.9. Then the Lady Trojans closed out the meet taking 1-3 in the 3000 and winning the 4×4.

“I’m proud of our girls and their accomplishments. They worked hard in the cold and managed to get as many points as they could,” Woelfle said. “I give lots of credit to Southwestern and their staff, they have a big program and a history of success.”

The boys meet was a harder battle, with Southwestern winning that one, 85-57.

Again it was the field that hurt the most with the only points coming in long and triple jump. Devin Eddy took third in triple and second in long, with Issiah Velez winning the long jump with a best of 19’6.”

Matt Hanlon, left, of Dunkirk wins the 110 hurdles.

The track was back and forth as expected with the Trojans doing well in the distance but Dunkirk coming out strong in the sprints. Southwestern won the 4×8 relay in a time of 8:52.1, then Matt Hanlon took a first in the 110 hurdles in 18.4. Dunkirk then went 1-2 in the 100 with Issiah Velez and Jonah Rosas running 11.8 and 12.0, respectively.

Southwestern came back going with a 1-2 in the 1600 led by Eddie Scroxton running a 4:44. Rosas, Eddy, Nelson Rosario, and Velez answered winning the 4×1 in 46.3, and then Nate Ganey, Rosario, and Miracle Berakah went 1-3 in the 400 with Ganey running a 53.7. The 400 hurdles went to the Trojans, and in the 800 they went 1-2 as well with Scroxton winning.

Dunkirk then again went 1-3 in the 200, Led by Ganey with Roasa and Rosario following. The times were 24.4, 24.7, and 25.1.

Scroxton finished his afternoon taking first in the 3200. Finally, the team of Hanlon, Berakah, Ganey, and Rosario took first in the 4×4.

“I was very impressed by both teams today,” Woelfle said of the boys matchup. “Dunkirk boys showed they can sprint, and I can’t wait to see what we can do when the weather clears. Southwestern has an amazing athlete in Scroxton to win the 4×8, 1600, 800, and 3200. That takes a lot. I wish this meet had taken place later in the season and we could have really seen some good times, but for the conditions we had, I was still quite impressed.”

Dunkirk will be back in action hosting the All Maroon Invite Saturday morning at 10 a.m.
