Fredonia All-Stars advance with win over Cuba/Bolivar

OBSERVER Staff Report

CUBA, N.Y. — The Fredonia 8-10 All-Stars baseball team came away with an exciting 15-12 victory over Cuba/Bolivar on Friday evening in the Sectional Little League baseball tournament in Cuba.

Fredonia found itself in the loser’s bracket after a loss to Batavia earlier in the week. Things weren’t any easier on Friday, as Fredonia had to battle back after an early 3-0 deficit. Fredonia came back to take a 6-3 lead, but the score was evened up at 6-6 and the game was back-and-forth the rest of the way.

Fredonia led 15-10 going to the bottom of the sixth inning, but after a pair of runs, the tying run came to the plate with two outs in the frame. Jordan Kelly induced a fly ball to right field to record the final out and finish off the win with a save.

Rocco Muscarella started the game on the mound for Fredonia and recorded six strikeouts. Fredonia used a total of four pitchers in the contest.

Graham Putney, Fredonia’s catcher for all six innings, led the Fredonia offense at the plate. He went 5-for-5 with a double and three runs scored for Fredonia. Muscarella was 4-for-5 with four runs, while Paul Tabone had two hits and two runs, while Joe DiCarlantonio had three hits and a pair of runs, as well.

“It was a really good win,” said Fredonia coach Mark Putney. “I’m really proud of them.”

Fredonia is now scheduled to play Central Amherst today. Should Fredonia advance, next up for the Fredonia All-Stars will be either Pittsford or Batavia, on Sunday
