Lady Wolverines bounce back

OBSERVER Staff Report

WESTFIELD — Thursday evening in Brocton, the Westfield/Brocton Lady Wolverines took an “L” for the first time all season.

Friday, they bounced back.

The Lady Wolverines came away with a 4-0 victory over Pine Valley in a CCAA Central girls soccer game at the NorthLake Soccer Complex in Westfield.

“It was tough to lose (Thursday), but I was really happy with how we responded,” said Westfield/Brocton coach Neil Huber. “We talked a lot about how we wanted to respond and I liked what I saw.”

Westfield/Brocton (12-1, 9-1) had four different goal scorers on Friday in the victory. Sheala Barresi scored the game’s first goal on an assist from Katie Bodenmiller in the first half. The Lady Wolverines added three more goals in the second half, starting with a goal by Thursday’s goal scorer Juli Smith, thanks to an assist by McKenzie Wolfe. Brocton senior Laura Johnston stepped out from her regular duties on the back line to score the game’s third goal, her first of the year, on an assist by Jamie Black.

“She’s one of those dynamic players who can do a lot,” said Huber of Johnston. “Getting her more involved in offensive zone can make a huge difference for us, at times.”

Then, after an earlier assist, Wolfe got a goal of her own to conclude the scoring, on Bodenmiller’s second assist of the day.

All-Star goalkeeper Angel Busch responded from Thursday — the only game all year she has allowed more than one goal — with six saves in a shutout. Friday’s victory was Busch’s ninth shutout of the season and set Westfield’s school shutout record.

Moving forward, Westfield/Brocton has a pair of home games next week at NorthLake, on Tuesday against Frewsburg and Thursday against Maple Grove. The Lady Wolverines remain in first place in the division and in Class C across Section VI after Friday’s victory.

“We fixed some things we needed to shore up,” said Huber on Friday. “Moving forward, I like our chances.”
