Blue Devils hockey hosts Chatham for ‘Teddy Bear Toss’

OBSERVER Staff Report

The Fredonia Blue Devils have one final game before the semester break, and it’s one that comes with a lot of off the ice importance.

Against Chatham on Saturday night, the Blue Devils will feature the team’s Teddy Bear toss event.

“We’re asking people to bring a new Teddy Bear,” said Blue Devils coach Jeff Meredith. “When we score our first goal of the game, they’ll toss the bears on the ice, all the proceeds will go to the Boys and Girls club of Dunkirk.”

The Blue Devils request people bring a brand new stuffed animal, that will be tossed onto the ice after the team’s first goal, with the proceeds all benefiting the Dunkirk Boys and Girls Club.

The Teddy Bear toss originated in hockey in 1993, and has been a tradition that has quickly spread through the CHL, to several lower leagues of hockey, including the college level, and the SUNYAC.

It has been a tough semester for the Blue Devils, who have found themselves in several close games, though often unable to pull out a victory despite the level of play. Fredonia will look to end the semester on a high note on Saturday, at 4 p.m.
