What a warm winter. Wildlife and the elderly have been reaping the benefits of warmer temperatures and little ice/snow cover. But sooner or later, you just know we are going to get it.

Rick Miller in Irving reports that one boat managed to get in some off shore fishing out of the mouth of the Cattaraugus Creek, but no report on their success. A few trout anglers have also had some success, but the fishing effort has been less than enthusiastic. Skip Bianco at Hogan’s Hut/Stow reports that the ice is off Chautauqua Lake again and anglers have resorted to using boats to get on the walleye/perch bite.

Shore anglers have also found success by targeting yellow perch at Long Point, and by the Ferry, using live minnows. Keeper size may vary, but the fishing has been decent. Some colder weather is in the future, so we still may get some ice fishing in. A road trip to Jamestown on Wednesday revealed that almost all the snow cover is gone and only a small patch of ice near the boat launch on Cassadaga Lake. Most of the ducks seemed to have moved on also with a few die hard mallards and Canadian geese sticking around. A lot of the ground cover got pushed down after the last snow fall so a rabbit/squirrel hunt with a bonus deer antler shed trip might be productive.
