Slade retiring as head of Section VI

WEST SENECA — Timm Slade, Section VI executive director for the past 11 years, will be retiring effective Nov. 11.

Slade, a graduate of Iroquois High School and former athletic director at Wilson, Pavilion and West Seneca, was hired by both the section and Erie 1 BOCES in 2009.

He was the first full-time executive director in Section VI history. He replaced Bob Dinse, who had taken the position after retiring from the Wilson school district.

Slade has served 33 years in education as a teacher, coach, administrator and in his latest role. The executive director’s main function is to interpret state education and New York State Public High School Athletic Association regulations as they pertain to interscholastic athletics. In addition, Slade worked closely with his sports chairs and oversaw all postseason play.

Corporate partnerships increased every year under his leadership.

“I have had the privilege of working closely with Timm Slade for the past eight years,” said Dr. Robert Zayas, NYSPHSAA executive director. “I have certainly relied upon Timm often for feedback, advice and guidance as our association navigates challenging situations. Timm has always been a source of expertise and knowledge and has become a good friend of mine. I know Section VI, NYSPHSAAA and I will miss his constant dedication, devotion and focus on doing what is best for student-athletes and interscholastic athletic programs throughout the state of New York.”

In his role, the former SUNY Brockport wrestler and football player and Iroquois Hall of Fame inductee, oversaw 98 high schools from 89 school districts. There are five leagues, spread over six counties in Section VI involving well over 60,000 student-athletes in 35 different sports. Slade ran 17 standing committees.

“It’s been an unforgettable experience being the executive director of our section,” Slade said. “I had the privilege of meeting and working with so many wonderful people that have become a part of my life. I would like to thank my colleagues, athletic directors, our chairpeople, athletic council members, officials, administrators, office personnel and everyone else who has supported Section VI. I’m very proud of the programs that we offered our students and the experiences they gained from participating.”

Section VI and Erie 1 BOCES will work together to fill the position over the next several weeks.
